Students at Moreton Morrell College are gearing up to host a family fun horse show to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Society.
Around 15 students will be involved in the event, which is the first-of-its-kind at the college, and has been organised from scratch by those in the second year of their Equine Management studies.
The equine event - which is open to the public and takes place on Saturday, May 28 - will feature a packed schedule of shows taking place in the equine arenas at the college, which is part of college group WCG (formerly Warwickshire College Group).
Students have been in touch with local businesses and traders to organise trade stands at the event, with a raffle also organised with donations from businesses in the region.
The event has been inspired by the success of the recent Lambing and Animals Weekend which attracted more than 4,000 people.
Shows and classes on the day will range from in-hand showing to ridden shows, with rosettes and prizes on offer to winners in other classes such as Best Ridden, Coloured Horse and Fancy Dress – where competitors will showcase their creativity.
The competitions are expected to attract more than 30 competitors.
The Alzheimer’s Charity was chosen by students and tutors after a series of presentations, with one student pitching the charity and the impact Alzheimer’s has had on their family.
Debra Juler, Equine Lecturer at Moreton Morrell College, said: “This event is a first of its kind for our students, with it being open to the public and raising money for an important cause.
“The students showed a keen interest to run their own equine event as part of their course, rather than taking part in an event that is already established.
“They’ve put in a lot of hard work and have organised a schedule of events across all of the arenas, from obstacle courses and show jumping, to more novelty categories like fancy dress.
“We’re hoping to attract plenty of local horse and pony owners to compete on the day and have organised for special rosettes and prizes to be presented. But it’s also set to be a day for all the family, and it would be a lovely setting to bring the family, put down a blanket, enjoy a picnic and the watch the competitions.”
Entry to the competitions is £10 per class, and it is free for families to attend and spectate.
