Coventry's Vintage Sleigh returns this Christmas

The hugely popular Vintage Sleigh returns to Coventry this Christmas to take families on a magical adventure to meet Santa.

The ride, which was previously based at the Co-Op on Corporation Street, has been bringing festive cheer to children in the city since 1956 with hundreds of thousands of individual journeys taken on the sleigh.

The experience moved to the Coventry Transport Museum in 2016 and had been running there each Christmas until 2020 when it moved online because of Covid-19 restrictions.

But it’s back for 2021 and will open on Saturday, December 4, at 9am and Jane Murphy, of the Coventry Transport Museum, says there has already been lots of interest and urged families to book their visit online as soon as possible.

She said: “One of the questions we’ve been repeatedly asked since we reopened earlier this year ‘is the Vintage Sleigh ride returning this Christmas?’

“And, I am delighted to be able to say that it is as it brings such joy to the people of Coventry each Christmas.

“Traditions evolve and change over time but this is one festive staple that the people of Coventry absolutely love and, after missing out last year, there’s even greater anticipation in 2021 – Coventry’s year as UK City of Culture.

“Visitors need to book online in advance so we are able to manage demand and make sure the experience is as safe as possible.”

Visitors will get to wander through a magical winter wonderland of festive activities and snowy scenes before taking their seats on the Vintage Sleigh ride where two trusty reindeer will pull them through a wintry, city scene.

On arrival at Lapland, they will meet Santa where they can tell him their Christmas wishes and receive a special gift.

Jane added: “As well as meeting Santa, our visitors will be entertained by his elves and see the special pink Barbie car from our museum collection.

“It promises to be an experience to remember.”

The whole experience costs just £10 per child, which includes a gift and entrance for two accompanying adults. Each visitor will also be given admission to the Coventry Transport Museum for the day of their visit.
