A Coventry hotel has brought back a classic dessert – and it’s proving to be a summer hit with diners.
The Telegraph Hotel has introduced Baked Alaska to its menu through the month of July and the mid-Century favourite is selling out quicker than its chefs can rustle them up.
In the first two weeks of the month, English strawberry & vanilla and pina colada flavoured Baked Alaska – a mix of sponge cake, ice cream and meringue cooked for a short period of time making it warm on the outside and cold on the inside – have been available and selling at a rate of more than 50 a week.
Sweet-toothed diners can try mango and passion fruit Baked Alaska from July 17 to July 23 and then banana and salted caramel from July 24 to the end of the month.
Amy Windsor, general manager of the Telegraph Hotel, said the idea to bring back the 1950s and 60s classic was inspired by a customer in the hotel’s Forme & Chase Restaurant.
She said: “One of our regular diners asked if it was possible to have Baked Alaska for dessert and it got us thinking that it is a treat that was hugely popular many years ago but one you don’t really see on menus any more.
“Chef was keen to put a new twist on the classic and, so, throughout July, we’ve been offering different flavours and they are proving to be incredibly popular.
“They look amazing and taste even better and are a great example of how it is good to listen to your customers and respond.
“We’re now looking at the idea of bringing back even more retro puddings and giving customers the chance to reminisce about some of those classic flavours of yesteryear!”
The Telegraph Hotel has 88 individually designed air-conditioned bedrooms set within the stylish, mid-Century former newspaper office.
Forme & Chase is open each day from midday until 9pm, with bar food available all day.
