Coventry’s Lunt Roman Fort will come to life again this summer as its festival returns for the first time since 2019.
The Lunt Roman Festival is taking place on Saturday, 16 July and Sunday, 17 July and will give visitors the chance to see Roman and Iron Age warriors in action as re-enactment group The Vicus take to the arena.
Another group, Britannia, will have crowds watching in awe as they go through the pomp and pageantry of a Late Roman military display, in addition to providing a gladiatorial demonstration.
There will be opportunities to get involved too as visitors get to try their hand at archery or take to the field in an interactive battle drill.
A range of replica Roman goods will also be on sale while refreshments from Karke Authentic Lebanese Food and The Great British Burger Co will also be available, as well as liquid refreshment from the award-winning Slaughterhouse Brewery.
Doors will open at 10am each day with the event running through until 4pm. Limited Tickets will be available on the day, but visitors are strongly encouraged to book in advance to avoid disappointment. Tickets are £12 for adults and £6 for concessions.
Rich Brooks, Learning Officer at the Lunt Roman Fort, said: “It’s great to see the Lunt Roman Festival come back after its absence due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
“The fort attracts a lot of interest all year round but nothing beats seeing it really come to life at the festival when visitors can see great re-enactments and take part in a range of exciting activities for all ages.
“There’s also the chance to explore the unique reconstructed monument, taking in the sites of the ramparts, the granary building and the only known gyrus inside a Roman fort!”
The earliest evidence of occupation at the Lunt Roman Fort has been dated at around AD60 around the time of the Boudican rebellion.
