From creating dry ice bubbles to finding out how laboratory testing works - children enjoyed experiments galore at a University of Warwick festival fun day promoting women in science.

To celebrate Coventry’s year as City of Culture, the University of Warwick Resonate Festival hosted the return of A Slice of Science – an afternoon of free inter-generational family-friendly workshops.

Hosted by the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Medicine, interactive workshops included ‘How to be a Brain Scientist’, ‘Robotics and Turtlestitch Coding’ and ‘What happens to your Test?’ organised by the Rosalind Franklin Laboratory in Leamington Spa.

Children from across Coventry and Warwickshire also discovered how to extract DNA from fruit and could take part in a design engineering taster class run by the university’s Engineering Society.

Talks ranged from ‘What is a Star?’ to ‘Chemistry in the Real World’ run by a student Q&A panel and ‘That’s for Boys: An entry into eSports and Gaming’.

Festival director Helen Wheatley, Professor of Film & Television Studies at the University of Warwick, said: “We hope to inspire a new generation of young scientists in our local communities in Coventry and Warwickshire with key scientific insights, from learning about what good gut bacteria is, to exploring exoplanets, sustainability and how we might save the planet.

“Reflecting the Resonate festival’s month-long programme of events in March celebrating Coventry’s ‘Amazing Women’ we wanted to promote in women in science and celebrate the women working in the sciences in the university, especially during British Science Week. It shows younger girls who may be interested in a future career in science just what can be achieved.”

Celebrating the power of creativity, conversation and connection, the Resonate Festival started in May 2021.

A 12-month programme of inspiring, interactive and free events is designed for all ages across Coventry and Warwickshire to spark ideas, curiosity and imagination.

The festival will culminate in a grand finale – Resonate 2022 – three days of live events and activities on the University of Warwick campus from April 19 to 21. To find out more visit https://www.resonatefestival.co.uk/
