The Charity ‘Friends of Plas Dol-y-Moch’ supports the work of Coventry’s Outdoor Education Residential Centre which provides opportunities for Coventry children to experience adventurous activities and overcome personal barriers in a natural environment. The Centre is funded through fees for the courses, paid by parents and schools. As a charity our objectives are:
Advancement of Education
To advance the education of the pupils attending Plas Dol-y-Moch Outdoor Education Centre (the Centre) by providing and assisting in the provision of facilities (not provided by the Local Education Authority) for education at the Centre.
Recreational Charities Act 1958
To provide or assist in the provision of facilities in the interests of social welfare for recreation or other leisure time activities for Coventry pupils who have need of such facilities by reason of their youth, disability, financial hardship or social circumstances with the object of improving their life chances.
To promote social inclusion for the public benefit by preventing pupils who visit the Centre from becoming socially excluded, relieving the needs of those who are socially excluded and assisting them to integrate into society.
To act as a resource for young people up to the age of 18 living in Coventry by providing advice and assistance and organising programmes of physical, educational and social activities.
Our purpose is to advance the prospects of young people in life by developing their skills, capacities and capabilities to participate in society as independent, mature and responsible individuals; advance their education and assist their employability.
The charity delivers these objectives by:
- supporting Plas Dol-y-Moch Outdoor Education Centre in its continuing objective of providing high quality outdoor and residential educational opportunities for the young people of Coventry;
- raising funds for the Centre to enable the development of new activities, resources and facilities which will improve the quality of their experience
- promoting the Centre and its aims to the citizens of Coventry and generating further /broader support for access to the Centre, including enhancing take up by disadvantaged young people
- creating links to other relevant groups and organisations.
In 2016 Plas Dol-y-Moch Outdoor Education Centre celebrated 50 years of providing high quality residential outdoor education courses to Coventry’s schools, pupils and communities. The courses are great fun and combine adventure with learning. We are aiming to raise the resources to make the Centre viable for the next 50 years. This means significantly increasing its capacity.
The population of young people in our city has and is rising rapidly. Coventry schools have over the last few years had to increase their forms of entry to accommodate this rise in numbers. Plas Dol –y- Moch needs to respond to this school expansion programme by being able to accommodate the increased numbers. Our aim is that all young people in Coventry have the opportunity to attend courses and benefit from the activities provided at the Centre. In order to do this we need to make the Centre bigger. .
The plan is to build a new kitchen and dining room. This will provide the space to extend and renovate the existing bedrooms, showering facilities and kit drying rooms to cope with increased numbers. We also need to finance the purchase of additional technical kit such as canoes, helmets, buoyancy aids & boots to use with the additional number of children and young people.
