Coventry Rugby is the oldest major sporting club in the city of Coventry. Founded in 1874, it is currently at the beginning of its 150th season and next year will be celebrating the full anniversary. During this time it has produced as host of international players, mainly for England, and today boasts three international players in its squad. It is the only professional rugby club in the whole of Warwickshire and the West Midlands, and following last season’s finish, is ranked 12th in the leading clubs in England.
Coventry Rugby Community Foundation is a nationally registered charity, working together with the rugby club to improve lives in our community, regardless of ethnicity, age, sex or sexual preference. The focus is on wellbeing and getting deprived children into sport through regular holiday sports camps, for both rugby and multi-sports under the supervision of our qualified full time community staff. In addition, players from the club carry out community work in local schools, helping to support children in learning to read and including vital work in SEND schools. We also operate a walking rugby section for older adults and a wheelchair rugby team. Our most recent initiative is establishing a programme of netball in local schools, aimed at establishing a hierarchy of teams under the banner of Coventry Netball.
Home is Butts Park Arena, which being in the CV1 postcode is in the heart of the city, with a large car park, and also easily accessible by public transport. Here we provide the majority of our activities on our modern artificial playing surface and some indoors. We run a major conferencing and events centre, with our in-house catering team able to host dinners for up to 180 people, whilst we have rooms available for rent for every size function. Match days are family-friendly fun times in a great atmosphere, with well-stocked bars and food outlets catering for everything from a bag of chips to a full three course meal. Children have the run of the pitch after the game is over and the bars stay open, with live music continuing into the night.
With Cov Rugby being deeply embedded in the DNA of the city and the surrounding areas, it was a natural step for us to join the C&W Champions family.
