Coventry won the bid to be UK City of Culture in 2021, and we were one of just five cities on the shortlist, along with Paisley, Stoke-on-Trent, Sunderland and Swansea.
The UK City of Culture competition is run by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport and happens every four years. The UK City of Culture competition was created after Liverpool and Glasgow were completely transformed by winning European Capital of Culture which is only available for UK cities to bid for every 18 years.
As a result of winning, tourism in Coventry could be boosted by £80 million, in addition to huge social, cultural and economic benefits. The most recent City of Culture, Hull, has seen £1bn of investment and confirmed a place in Rough Guide’s Top 10 cities to visit.
